Bass & Rhythm Guitar
Born December 26th in Bessemer Al and raised in Grand Prairie Texas, Ken Dunkin returned to make Alabama his home. It was no time till he found that singing was his personal way of praising the Lord. “It was always’ my pastime, I don't hunt, fish, ski or play golf- so if I have free time I sing and play guitar” says Dunkin “and I have been doing so since I was seventeen.” It became my hobby. My favorite gospel song is “ Sinner Saved By Grace” (playing in the background) and it has a lot of meaning for me. I had always enjoyed the music of “The Cathedrals” and wanted to bless people like they had done. I also enjoy the music of Ernie Haase.
A driving desire to sing bass in a Gospel setting along with a definite calling from the Lord in 1997, led Ken to begin singing solo professionally. In April, 2006, Carol Hutto met him at a singing she was attending, and asked him if he would like to join the Dotson Family Quartet. Carol said “He had a unique bass sound our group needed.” When Ken said “Yes I would” a new and exciting direction with this talented group had begun. Ken states, “The Lord brought us together and I expect a great blessing through this group as we have the opportunity to witness through the music and touch the lives of our audiences”. Ken has already captured the hearts of our audiences with his smooth incredible deep bass voice! Audiences listen in amazement as he displays some of the deepest low notes in Southern Gospel Music.
Group member Archie Dotson says “He is a #1 genuine bass singer, his singing style and phrasing is patterned after many gospel legends. He is simply one of the best old school southern gospel bass singers that I have ever been around.” We hear often how folks "love that bass singer". Ken's great lower range always seems to elicit a big reaction from our crowds. He is a disciplined and dedicated servant who loves the Lord with all his heart.
Ken and his lovely wife, Marilyn Denise were married Jan 28 1994 and reside in Oak Grove AL. Together they have 4 children, Kelly, Ashley (both in Texas) Heather (Mississippi), and Brooke (Ft.Payne AL) along with 4 beautiful grandchildren, Jesse, Jacob, Trinity and one new addition Asher Michael.
When not singing, Ken enjoys eating “anything southern style” at Home Plate Diner, and if “Alabama Crimson Tide football is on TV, it is even better!" He also enjoys going to group practice.....he says "there's always something good to eat at Christine's house when the ladies of the group do the cooking."
When asked what his goals are he replied, “I want to continue serving the Lord, through music and keep a good Christian attitude, through everyday life. To strive to do God’s will and put him first in my life. “
When asked his favorite scripture Ken replied with, John 3: 16-17
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."
